In Colorado we don’t use the term alimony anymore. Now it is called maintenance. If you’ve been married for at least three years and you are the lower earning spouse in the marriage, maintenance is going to be on the plate for discussion. All other issues aside, you calculate maintenance this way: forty percent of the higher earner’s gross monthly income minus fifty percent of the lower earner’s gross monthly income. However, time, the length of the marriage and the lifestyle of the marriage are also contributing factors. So it’s not quite as simple as this formula, but, in the end, that’s roughly what you can expect in terms of maintenance in Colorado.
